How to use a sunscreen. Advice from Dermatest Australia (leading authority and testing agency)
It is essential to use sunscreen correctly to achieve protection.
• Apply sunscreen liberally to all sun-exposed areas so that it forms a film when initially applied. Most people do not use enough. It takes at least six teaspoons of lotion to cover the sun-exposed areas of the body of one average adult person.
• It takes 20–30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin and it can easily be rubbed off, so apply it at least half an hour before going out in the sun.
• Reapply after half an hour so that the ‘mountains’, as well as the ‘valleys’, are protected (imagine you are painting a wall – two coats of paint provide a more even coverage than one).
• Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours if staying out in the sun for more than an hour during the day.
• Re-apply immediately after swimming, excessive sweating, or if rubbed off by clothing or towelling, even if the product claims to be “water resistant”.
• Insect repellents reduce the sunscreen's SPF so when using together, use a sunscreen with a higher SPF and re-apply more often.

Keep in mind that while crucial, sunscreen alone is not enough. Seek the shade whenever possible, wear sun-safe clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, for a complete sun protection strategy.

Animal Welfare

In line with our ambition to be a company having a regenerative impact on the planet we do not test on animals.

We firmly believe animal cruelty is more than just testing the finished beauty products on animals. Not only do we not test on animals we review every ingredient in our products, to ensure they are not tested on animals.

We are certified by PETA. You can search their database for all PETA certified businesses.

We continually review ingredients we use to ensure that popularity and demand does not lead to deforestation and loss of animal life.

Pam Oil & threats to orangutans.

Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004 by green organisations (e.g. WWF) in response to the negative consequences of the overwhelming global demand for palm oil. Palm oil is the primary cause of deforestation of tropical rainforest in Indonesia and Malaysia.

The criteria of the RSPO certification have a great impact on the orangutans because they help structure and determine how oil palm plantations are to be managed and what considerations to protect nature and wildlife are to be taken in their operation. This is crucial as more than 75% of the remaining wild orangutans in Borneo live in areas that are not officially protected.

Emma Lewisham only uses RSPO certified palm extracts in our products.

Emma is an active and passionate supporting of The Orangutan Project. We are an official green partner.

You can read about our decision to use palm extracts (HERE).

Vegan

All of our products are vegan, apart from our Skin Shield sunscreens which have a very small amount of beeswax. Our bees are not killed or harmed for the (small amount of) wax that we use in our products, nor are they being harmed in any way whatsoever.

When honey boxes are taken off the hives, the wax is cut open and the honey is extracted. The wax that is cut off and we use in our formulations – called cappings wax – is technically a waste product of honey extracting. If it wasn’t used, it would just be dumped. The honey boxes are added and removed through the season, but the bees’ home where they live is untouched. Therefore, it is a sustainable practice that is not cruel to the bees as a waste product is being used.

The beeswax we use is from New Zealand where the bees are away from city pollution, pesticides, insecticides, herbicide or fungicides.
